PRR Coaling Tipple, 1965
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8541, #8532, #8530, #8531, #8534, and #8535. All are ES-12M switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,200 horsepower each. #8541 was built in 1952, but all of the others were built in 1953. They're pulling a westbound 39-car mixed-cargo freight train past ANTIS Tower. The cabin car is #477534. This is another view facing northeast. On the far left are the Westbound Receiving Yards, filled with rusting freight cars. On the far right, many deadlined diesels, old freight cars, and even some steam locomotive tenders are visible.
